Pell Lake - Gladys Elda Bishop, nee Steil, 75, died Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at her home following a prolonged illness. Gladys was born and raised in Detroit, the daughter of Eric and Elda Willman Steil. She was a world traveler and resident of many places. After graduating from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in teaching and Michigan State University with a master's degree in education, she taught overseas in Germany and the Philippines. She was introduced to square dancing and became a life long member of the Overseas Square Dancing Association. Upon returning to the United States she took up teaching elementary school students at Lakewood School (TwinLakes) and giving beginner piano lessons in her home. Gladys was an avid player of card games, in particular pinochle and euchre, and loved to teach anyone new games. She appeared in several three- act comedy performances and musicals put on by the Gaslight Players (Twin Lakes). Along with Larry Baker, she co-created the Spotlight Players, a Lakewood School theater group for sixth, seventh, and eight graders. While dancing with the Limber Timbers (Delavan), Gladys met Martin Bishop (Pell Lake) and lived happily for many years until his death in 2012. Gladys was always on the go and had many interests and obligations. Over the years, she played the organ at Christ Lutheran Church (Paddock Lake). St. Mary's Church (Pell Lake), and Genoa City United Methodist Church. She was a member of a couple book clubs and regularly gathered for stimulating discussions. She was an active member of the Southern Lakes United Educators. Gladys always had a cheerful smile and a great positive attitude. Despite her busyness, Gladys was a devoted Christian and was always willing to help fellow people. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Bishop, father Eric Steil Sr, and mother, Elda Steil.
